The authority concerned is going tougher on illegal mobile phone that are widely being used in the country. Such illegal handsets that are not centrally registered will soon be blocked from the network.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is gearing up to disconnect such handsets across the country. In a notice issued on Sunday, the telecommunication watchdog confirmed this matter.

In the notification, it is said that the operation of the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) has been started to ensure various government services by tagging each mobile phone with a registered SIM card connecting BTRC national identity.

This will stop the use of illegally manufactured or imported mobile phones. At the same time, it will also increase the government revenue. The BTRC said that illegal mobile phone networks will soon be disconnected before fully activating NEIR. In this situation, everyone has to check the validity before buying the mobile handset.

Earlier, on January 16, the State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak announced that unregistered mobile phones will be banned in the country.

He said that unregistered mobile phones will be stopped to control crime in the country. BTRC has a mobile phone database and automatic registration system.
