Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said that it was going to ensure tight security measures to ensure that the city dwellers could shop, commute and move about freely in the upcoming holy month of Ramadan and celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr. This is already being ensured with the passing of Buddha Purnima and the presence of public security forces around the capital to provide safety and security to the people.

First of all, security procedures during the Ramadan are heightened almost every year, but given the growth in the number of hijackers and innovative techniques applied for mugging and robbing, the need for tighter security is becoming essential. Reports say that plainclothes police will be deployed on all important city points including shopping malls alongside regular police in uniform in order to ensure fool proof security. Moreover, adequate number of policemen will be stationed at every shopping mall.

However, comparing the size of our metropolitan police force, the numbers of shopping malls in Dhaka have grown at a disproportionate rate. To this the shop and mall owners should all collectively remain watchful during the festive season.

If necessary, the possibility for recruiting volunteers can be explored. Moreover, the DMP should bring all shopping malls under the protective shroud by installing CC cameras for round the clock monitoring. Not only that, police foot-patrols should also be on the streets to provide constant security to the public.

Surveillance of intelligence agencies and police patrolling should stretch as far as bus and launch terminals and train stations. More than any time before, the highway police should run the extra mile for ensuring safe and secure travelling of the passengers who are home bound during the Eid.

After about three weeks of the fasting, the homebound people will flock to the railway stations, bus and launch terminals. Ensuring free and safe movement of them has always proved to be a gigantic task and it is expected that this year law enforcers would be able create a better environment on their way to home. In all this, the willing participation of all citizens is very vital as they need to cooperate with our law enforcement agencies in all capacities for making the forthcoming Ramadan and Eid much safer, secure and joyous.
