Works to bridge the mighty Padma is in full progress despite coronavirus scare. The main bridge has a total of 42 piers. Of them 39 have been completed to date and construction of the remaining three piers is ongoing. It has a total of 41 spans of steel truss, and 25 of them have already erected. In general, officials say, 85.65 percent of physical progress has been achieved to date, and the construction is going smoothly.

The Padma Bridge is located about 40km southwest of Dhaka. The project mainly includes the main bridge (6.150kilometer), roadway and railway approach viaducts on both sides (3.679 kilometer), and roadway approach roads on both sides (220 meter), among others.

The government is optimistic to complete the project by June 2021. When completed it will be the largest bridge in Bangladesh. It will connect Louhajong, Munshiganj to Shariatpur and Madaripur, linking the south-west of the country, to northern and eastern regions. Estimates suggest the mega structure will boost Bangladesh’s GDP by 1.2 percent.
