The High Court (HC) has issued an order asking for an inquiry into the burial of a Freedom Fighter (FF) without gourd of honor in Khishoreganj.

The HC bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir issued the order on Sunday (February 13) following a writ petition.

Barrister Syed Saidul Haque Sumon, lawyer of the Supreme Court, filed the writ petition in the HC on January 31, seeking its directive over investigation into the burial of the Freedom Fighter.

In its February 13 order, the higher court ordered the secretaries to the Liberation War Affairs Ministry and the Public Administration Ministry, and the authorities concerned of Jatiyo Muktijoddha Council to probe the matter.

They have also been asked to investigate whether the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) is responsible for the incident.

Abdul Motaleb Shikder, a heroic freedom fighter and a resident of South Rabarkandi under Bajitpur Municipality in Bajitpur upazila of Kishoreganj, died on January 28. The Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) was absent at the state funeral of the FF although the policemen were present. Due to UNO’s absence the FF was buried without the state honour at the local Rabarkandi graveyard on January 29. This caused anger among the local people.

On February 8, the High Court issued a rule asking as to why it should not order an inquiry into the matter after a petition was filed seeking that the guard of honour be bestowed upon Shikder’s grave at Bajitpur upazila.

The High Court has said that the freedom fighter was insulted by burying him without state honor.
