Four-lane rural roads soon

As per the ongoing development across the country, the government has taken a plan to construct 4-Lane roads in rural areas for the convenience of smooth transportation across the country. If needed, the government will also construct four lane roads deeper in the villages, sources said.

After the independence, there has been little development of rural roads across the country. Some roads were developed due to the rural needs but most of them remain in dilapidated conditions. The Local Government Engineering Department would implement the rural road improvement programme to convert the existing narrow, single roads into four-lane.

In this regard, the LGED will construct 3,54,000 kilometres of new roads in the rural areas. Considering the demand and need, the LGED will construct four-lane roads at upazilas and unions level. According to the LGED plans, new rural roads would be constructed as four-lane with using bituminous carpeting. The LGED can acquire land directly from the owner for widening roads if necessary. All meandering roads are to be straightened during the construction, sources said.

According to the United Nations (UN), Bangladesh is dreaming to achieve and graduate into a developed country 2030. As per the announcement of the World Bank, Bangladesh is implementing projects to achieve the status of a middle-income country index. There are 100 economic zones being constructed in the country. Industries and power plants has been installing at upazilas and union level. Massive changes are visible in the infrastructure across the country through the ongoing developments.

The Roads and Highways Department has the responsibility for development national, regional and district level roads and highways. “Of the total, there is 3,54,000 km rural roads now in the country. Out of them, 37,000km are in upazilas, 42,000 are in unions and 2,75,000km roads are in the villages.

According to a planning commission circulated gazette, all roads are being supervised as per the circular. Now LGED has prepared a new proposal updating the design infrastructure of the rural roads which has been already approved by the local government ministry. The LGED are waiting for the gazette publication from the planning commission. After publishing the gazette notification, the LGED will start working on the new infrastructure of the rural roads.
