As part of the administration's regular campaign to protect mother Hilsa during the breeding season, the naval police have seized 300,000 metres of illegal current net from the Meghna River in Hatiya upazila of Noakhali.

The nets were seized from the Neyaz Mia Ghat area of the Meghna River on Sunday morning. However, it was not possible to arrest anyone as the unscrupulous fishermen fled leaving the net there.

Inspector Nasir Uddin, In-Charge of the Nalchira Naval Police Outpost, said the operation was carried out on the basis of secret information in the Moulvirchar and Neyaz Miah ghat areas of the Meghna River.

Sensing the presence of police during the operation, the fishermen left their nets in the river and fled. Later, 300,000 metre of illegal current net was seized from there. With the consent of the Upazila Fisheries Officer, the seized nets were brought ashore and destroyed by fire.
