Nationwide campaign begins

2cr children to receive Vit A capsule in city

A nationwide campaign to feed vitamin A capsules to children aged six months to five years have started Saturday morning. The four-day programme will run until December 14. 

Children will be administered A capsules every day from 8 am to 4 pm. At this time around two crore children will get Vitamin A Plus capsules.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) have also started their campaign to give vitamin A capsules to children.

The campaign started on Saturday morning at 1,487 centres in 75 wards of DSCC, and 1,905 centers in 54 wards under DNCC.

At a press conference in this regard, the Chief Health Officer of DNCC Brigadier General Jobaidur Rahman said, “This time the target has been set to vaccinate over 8.3 lakh in DNCC. Of them, over 1.26 children aged six to 11 months and around seven lakh children aged one to five years will be given the vitamin capsules.”

On the other hand, Dhaka South City Corporation officials informed in a press conference that the campaign will run from 8 am to 4 pm where 2,974 volunteers and 112 supervisers will oversee the programme.

Dr Gazi Ahmad Hasan, Deputy Programme Manager (DPM) of the National Nutrition Service and National Vitamin A Plus Campaign, said that the campaign was to provide one blue vitamin A Plus capsule to about 23 lakh children aged six to 11 months across the country. Additionally, about 1.6 crore children between the ages of 12 and 59 months will be given one red vitamin A plus capsule.

He said,“The campaign will run in about 120,000 centers across the country. However, due to the pandemic, the operation of mobile centers at bus and railway stations will not be conducted this year.”

Furthermore, children will be provided with the capsules at various non-governmental organizations (NGOs), such as the Sun Smile Clinic etc. Each center will have two volunteers with a health worker.

It was informed that volunteers have been trained at every upazila and union level. Health assistants and health inspectors are assigned to supervise them along with NGO volunteers.
