Fisheries and Livestock Minister Rezaul Karim said that the National Zoo in Mirpur of the capital will be opened this week. He told this while talking to reporters at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

To prevent spread of the Covid-19 infection, the government has repeatedly imposed restrictions across the country since 2020. The National Zoo was opened on November 10 last year when the situation was somewhat normal.

Later, when the corona situation in deteriorated, the zoo was declared closed again on April 2 of the current year and the zoo has been closed since then.

Earlier, National Zoo Curator Dr Md Abdul Latif said that the zoo is not the same as other entertainment centers. The living animals in the zoo are at the risk of being infected with the virus as well. If one is infected, it could spread and that’s why visitors are still not allowed to enter only to avoid the risk.

According to the concerned, special preparations are being made at the zoo to keep the animals risk free. After the preparations are complete, visitors will have to collect tickets by standing in a red circle three feet away from the entrance gate. Everyone has to enter after wearing a mask and walk around maintaining social distance inside.

Hand sanitizers, soap and water will be provided at 12 places for the visitors at different spots in the zoo. A one-way road is set to be made for visitors inside. Announcements will be made at all times to comply with the restrictions.

Security in front of the animals will be further enhanced. Dirt accumulated in the zoo, will be removed and the animal sheds are being renovated.

Recently, the government has opened various tourist and entertainment centers in the country conditionally.

Regarding latest decisions, the curator said, “We have not received any instructions yet. We are ready and we will be able to open the zoo as soon as we get instructions.”
