Elections to 57 out of 64 Zila Parishads across the country ended peacefully on Monday.Electronic voting machines (EVMs) were used in the polls.
According to the Election Commission, the voting began at 9:00 am and ended at 2:00 pm without any break under the supervision of the deputy commissioners who acted as the returning officers.
At the end of the voting, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KaziHabibulAwal expressed satisfaction with the polling environment in the ZilaParishad elections. He also said that no untoward incident took place anywhere.
KaziHabibulAwal made the remarks after reviewing the CCTV footage of various polling centres from the Election Commission building atAgargaon in the capital on Monday afternoon.
The election commission officers sat in the control room of the EC building from 9:00am.
Around 1400 hidden cameras were installed in 925 polling booths of 462 polling centres. A control room was set up at the EC building. Officials analyzed the situation by seeing it on the big monitor. The commission said that it did not find any irregularities.
Sixty thousand 866 representatives voted in this election. CEC expressed satisfaction with the whole situation.
In this election, 92 people contested for the post of chairman, 1485 people contested the post of member, and 603 people contested the post of reserved women member.
A press release, signed by EC Joint Secretary (Public Relations) SM Asaduzzaman, said that the authorities were asked to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the upazila headquarters of the respective polling stations in order to keep the CC cameras and EVMs functioning properly so that the voters can cast their ballots properly.
The EC said that 26 chairmen, 18 women members and 65 general members were elected unopposed in the ZilaParishad elections.
Chapainawabganj and Noakhali Zila Parishad elections have been postponed on the direction of the court. All the candidates in Bhola and Feni districts were elected unopposed. As a result, no polls were held in any of these two districts.
Meanwhile, BSS adds, valiant Freedom Fighter Meer Iqbal, Awami League nominated candidate, has won in the election of chairman of Rajshahi Zila Parishad on Monday.
Meer Iqbal bagged 601 votes, while his nearest rival independent candidate Muhammad Akteruzzaman got 566 votes.
Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Abdul Jalil said Meer Iqbal has been elected chairman unofficially.
A total of 1,175 out of total 1,185 voters exercised their rights of franchise in the election.
Apart from this, Valiant Freedom Fighter Anwarul Alam Badal and Afzal Hossain got seven and four votes in the election respectively.
