A man allegedly beat his niece to death at Chhatak upazila in Sunamganj on Monday during arbitration to settle a murder case in which both of the victim and his maternal uncle were accused.
The deceased was identified as Sadir Ahmad, 30, son of Manar Miah of Banayat village under Jawabazar union of Chhatak upazila, police said. Locals said that Mansab Ali, 45, son of Asab Ali of the same village Banayat, and his older sister’s son Sadir Ahmad along with several others were accused for killing a neighbour around two years back.
On Sunday night, they arranged a village arbitration meeting to convince the family members of the deceased through paying compensation, they said.
At one stage of the meeting, Sadir and his uncle Mansab engaged in a quarrel over determining the amount of compensation around 1:30 am while Mansab in association with other accused in the murder case rampantly beat up Sadir, leaving him critically injured, the locals said.
Later, Sadir was taken to Sylhet Osmani medical college hospital where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Chhatak police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman confirmed the incident and said that they were trying to arrest the suspected killers of Sadir.
The victim’s body was handed over to his relatives in the afternoon after completion of post-mortem examination at the SOMCH, he said in the evening, adding that the victim’s family would file a case after his burial.
