Youth jailed for assaulting JnU professor and his father

A teacher of Jagannath University (JnU) and his father were attacked in Keraniganj, Dhaka, for allegedly stopping an addict from consuming drugs. The court has sent the accused to jail in a case filed in this incident.

Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate Court Judge Tanvir Ahmed ordered the accused Ehsanur Haque Mahim (22) to be sent to jail on Friday (April 10). At the same time, the next hearing of the case has been fixed for Sunday (April 12). Khalid Hossain, the lawyer of the victim teacher, confirmed this information.

According to court sources, after the incident, the police arrested the accused Mahim and presented him in court. Later, after the hearing, the judge ordered him to be sent to jail.

Earlier, the attack took place at around 7:45 pm on Thursday (April 9) in the Madaripur Road-2 area of Kalindi Union under Keraniganj Model Police Station.

According to the complaint, the accused Mahim had been hanging out and consuming drugs in front of the house of Md. Raisul Islam, an associate professor of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Jagannath University, for a long time. When Mahim was asked about the matter, he threatened the victim's family members at various times.

On the day of the incident, when teacher Raisul Islam's father Nazrul Islam (67) asked Mahim to stop hanging out there, Mahim got angry and abused him in bad language and at one point threw Nazrul to the ground and kicked him. Later, when he tried to hit Nazrul with an iron rod and it hit him under the eye, causing him to suffer bloody injuries. At that time, when the people around heard the screams, the accused tried to escape. Later, the agitated crowd captured him and handed him over to the police.

In this incident, teacher Raisul Islam alleged that the accused took away about six thousand taka of cash from his father's pocket.

When he went to file a case at the police station the day after the incident, the victim initially alleged that the complaint was taken as a general diary (GD). Later, considering the seriousness of the matter, the police took up the case.

Meanwhile, students of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of Jagannath University staged a protest while the accused was being taken to court on Friday. They demanded speedy trial and exemplary punishment.

Dhaka District Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman remarked that the incident is being viewed seriously and legal proceedings are underway.
