A young man was hacked to death at Gauripur Bus Stand along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Daudkandi upazila of Cumilla on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Md Al-Mamun, also known as Mamun Samrat, son of Mosharraf Hossain alias Mukbul Member, a resident of Sholakandi village under Titas upazila in the district.
According to police and witnesses, Mamun was travelling on an air-conditioned bus from Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar, accompanied by three women. Around 11:30pm, he got off the bus at Gauripur Bus Stand to buy water.
Moments after stepping off, a group of unidentified assailants ambushed him and hacked him repeatedly on the head with machetes. The attackers left only after confirming his death.
Police rushed to the spot and took Mamun to Gauripur Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
His body was later sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Daudkandi Model Police Station, Zunaid Chowdhury Officer-in-charge said Mamun had been facing at least 23 cases involving drugs and other criminal activities.
“We are working to identify and arrest those involved in the murder,” the OC said, adding that a manhunt is underway to arrest the killers.
