A youth was reportedly beaten to death by a group of people after being suspected of stealing at a house in Hathazari of Chattogram early Saturday.
The deceased was Asaduzzaman Rahat, 22, son of Salamat Ullah Tipu of Alipur village of ward no. 4 of the municipality.
Police and local sources said that Rahat entered a house of Maulana Habibulla near Noor Mousque of the municipality at around 3.30am on Saturday. Hearing shouting for help, locals came to spot and detained the youth. The angry people beat the youth severely that left him critically injured.
Later, the injured was taken to the upazial health complex where doctors declared him dead upon arrival, said Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Rashim Chakma. Locals claimed that Rahat was a professional thief in the area.
Sub-Inspector of Hathazar police station Md Hasan said police recovered the body and sent it to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital for autopsy. He said if the family members filed any compliant in this regard, they will take action.
