A youth was allegedly tortured to death at a private drug rehabilitation center, named ‘Ador Madokasokti Niramoy Kendra’, in Savar on the outskirts of the capital on Friday. On information, police recovered the body from Enam Medical Collage Hospital.
The deceased was identified as Jahangir Alam, 30, son of late Hafiz Uddin of Burikanda village under Fulpur police station of Mymensingh. The man used to work at a restaurant in Talbag area of Savar. Merajur Rehan, Emergency Medical Officer of Enam Medical College Hospital said, “Someone named Jewel brought the body to this hospital on Friday morning. We found him death”
Md. Manik, elder brother of the deceased, alleged that the staffs of the drug rehabilitation center killed Jahangir by torturing him severely on Thursday midnight. But the authorities of the rehab center sent him to hospital after his death in an attempt of hiding the incident, he added.
Manik told The Bangladesh Post, “Recently Jahangir become addicted to drug and we decided to admit him into a rehabilitation center. The staffs of ‘Ador Madokashokti Niramoy Kendra’ took him into their rehab center on Thursday afternoon, when he was absolutely fine. Later, the owner of the center Jewel told us to come to Enam Medical College Hospital over phone this morning and we found Jahangir dead at the hospital. We also found several injury marks on Jahangir’s body.”
Md. Moniruzzaman, Sub-Inspector of Savar Model Police Station said, “On information, we rushed to the hospital and recovered the body. Initially we guessed that the reason of his death might be torture, as we found several injury marks on the body.” However, the actual reason behind the death could be confirmed only after the autopsy, he added.
On the other hand, this correspondent could not reach the authorities of the rehab center despite making several phone calls and visiting the center. Even there was no doctor found in the rehab center during the visit. Nevertheless, a staff of the rehab center named Labib confirmed that the incident took place on Thursday midnight but declined to comment anymore in this regards.
When contacted, AKM Shaukat Islam, Deputy Director of District Narcotics Control Office in Dhaka confirmed that the drug rehabilitation center, Ador Madokashokti Niramoy Kendra have authority’s approval. He, however, assured that they would investigate the matter.
