A young man died after falling from the roof of Noakhali's Sadar Upazila after fleeing from the police out of fear. The deceased was identified as Raju (20) son of Mohammad Sharif of Chandrapur area in Noakhali municipality's 2nd ward.
The incident took place on Wednesday (August 27) when he jumped from the roof while fleeing from the fourth floor of Ahmed Manzil adjacent to Maijdi Bazar.
Enamul Haque Bablu (20) son of Kiran Miah of the same area was seriously injured in the incident. He was later sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
Police say they are both defendants in multiple cases and warrants were out fir them in police assault cases. Four people have been detained in this incident. The detainees are Qayyum, Babul, Shakil and Ataur of the same area.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sudharam Police Station Nabir Hossain said a motorcycle belonging to Abdul Qayyum, a member of a youth gang, was stolen from the ground floor of Ahmed Manzil in East Chandrapur of Maijdi town a few days ago. Abdul Qayyum (25) a member of the youth gang, and his accomplices abducted Ataur Rahman (31) around 9pm on Wednesday on allegations of stealing the motorcycle. Later, Ahmed brought him to the 4th floor of the manzil and beat him severely. At one stage, he got him to sign a white stamp of 300 rupees.
He added that later Ataur's relatives called the emergency service number 999. Sudharam Thana was informed about the matter from 999 and launched an operation there.
Fearing the presence of the police, Raju and Bablu fled trying to climb down a pipe through the back of the building and fell down. Raju died on the spot and Babul was seriously injured. Police rescued Ataur from the fourth floor of Ahmed Manzil. At the same time, the police detained 4 members of the youth gang from the spot.
