Writ petition filed challenging Murad’s MP post

A writ has been filed with the High Court (HC) challenging the legality of MP post of Dr Murad Hasan who has lost his ministry and position following offensive and indecent remarks on women.

Advocate Yunus Ali Akhand, a lawyer of Bangladesh Supreme Court, filed the writ petition on Wednesday (December 8) against Murad who was elected MP from Jamalpur-4 constituency.

The writ also sought judicial investigation into the activities of just former State Minister for Information and Broadcasting. 

The HC bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah are likely to hear the writ in the next week.

Dr Murad Hasan resigned from the Cabinet on Tuesday. President M Abdul Hamid accepted his resignation letter on that day. Immediately after that, a gazette was published in this regard.   

Murad has come under criticism from various quarters for his disrespectful remarks in an interview on social media. A number of audio and video clips containing indecent remarks also went viral on social media during the last few days.

During a recent social media interview, Murad made ugly and derogatory remarks on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique Rahman and her granddaughter Zaima Rahman.

Apart from the BNP men, the country’s women rights groups, feminists, rights activists and academicians have also expressed disappointment over the comments.

Meanwhile, a two-year-old phone conversation of Murad with actor Mamnun Hasan Emon and actress Mahiya Mahi recently went viral on social media. In that audio clip, Murad made derogatory comments on the actress, threatened her and gave her an alleged indecent proposal.

On Monday night, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked Murad to resign from the Cabinet by Tuesday over his recent derogatory remarks on social media.

Later on Tuesday morning, State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murad Hasan submitted his resignation letter to the Information Ministry citing ‘personal reasons’.

Meanwhile, Murad was relieved from the post of Health and Population Affairs Secretary of Jamalpur district unit of ruling Awami League.

Jamalpur district unit of the party took the decision of punitive action against Murad for damaging the party’s image and for his involvement in anti-disciplinary activities.
