The High Court has rejected a writ petition filed to stop the eviction of ex-MP Golam Maula Rony’s house at Ulania Bazar in Galachipa upazila of Patuakhali

The HC bench of Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Md. Akhtaruzzaman rejected the writ petition on Sunday.

Advocate Emdadul Haque Kazi stood for Golam Maula Rony, while Deputy Attorney General Nowroz Md Rasel Chowdhury represented the state.  Emdadul Haque Kazi said that they would appeal to the Appellate Division challenging the order of the High Court.

The lawyer said, “We told the court in the hearing that Golam Maula Rony has been living in this house since 1960. His father purchased the house from one Gyanendra Kumar Roy Chowdhury. In 1970 this house was submerged by floodwater and then all the documents of the house were lost. In 2001, a two-storey building was built here. Even then the government did not say anything. Golam Maula Rony’s father died in 2010.”

He further said, “We challenged the eviction notice and filed a writ in the High Court on June 30, many years after the possession of the house. The higher court dismissed the writ.”

Meanwhile, according to media reports, Golam Maula Rony, a former Awami League MP from Patuakhali-3 constituency, was given several notices to remove his houses from the government land, but he didn’t pay heed to the notices.

Against this backdrop, the local administration carried out an operation on July 19 and demolished the illegal building of the former MP. The district administration demolished at least 15 illegal structures, including the building of Golam Maula Rony, constructed on the government land.

It was reported that the former MP took lease of a portion of the land in Ulania Bazar area from upazila administration for business purpose for a year. But he later built  a two-storey building there.

The district administration issued notices thrice– 2013, 2018 and 2022 – to remove the structures from the place.

It was reported that many people, including Golam Maula Rony, constructed buildings at Ulania Bazar area on government land. Five per cent of the government land at this bazar has been occupied by the ex-MP.
