World Glaucoma Week has begun in Bangladesh as elsewhere in the world. The National Institute of Eye and Hospital brought a rally and organised a screening camps on Monday at the hospital premises to make people aware of the disease that can cause blindness.

Director of the hospital Prof Golam Mostafa and Head of the Glaucoma Department Prof Iftekhar Md Munir were present, among other doctors.

At least 70 people tested their eyes for glaucoma which is caused when pressure builds up inside the eye, damaging the optic nerve that connects the eye to the brain. Not treated on time can cause irreversible blindness. The week is being observed every year from March 8 to March 14.
