World Consumer Rights Day today

The World Consumer Rights Day will be observed in the country today (Wednesday) as elsewhere in the world with the theme 'Empowering consumers through clean energy transitions (NirapodJalani, Vokta-bandhobPrithibi)'. 

On the eve of the day, President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages greeting all consumers and wishing all success of the day's programmes.

Abdul Hamid, in his message, said to ensure energy security for national prosperity, protection of consumer rights and sustainable development, the dependence on 

 fossil fuels should be reduced and the use of renewable energy should be increased.

The head of the state hoped that the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection will take effective steps in the prevention of adulteration, and hoarding and monitor the overall supervision of the market system alongside ensuring marketing and market management of safe fuel required for consumers.

Noting that consumers' right is universal, the President said the government formulated the Consumers' Right Protection Act, 2009 to ensure consumers' rights.

There is no alternative to the concerted efforts of the people, public representatives, businessmen and public servants for the proper implementation of the law, Hamid added.

He hoped that all institutions concerned, including the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, will sincerely fulfil their responsibilities assigned to them in the proper implementation of the existing laws to protect the rights of the mass people of the country.

In her message, Sheikh Hasina said her Awami League government is very attentive to protecting consumers' rights to ensure the civic rights of the people of Bangladesh keeping consistent with the developed countries. 

In this regard, the government formulated the Consumers' Right Protection Act, 2009 and established the Directorate of National Consumers' Right Protection in 2010 for the successful implementation of the act, the Premier said.

Since its inception, the Directorate has been playing a significant role in upholding consumer rights by protecting consumer rights, preventing anti-consumer rights activities and disposal of consumer rights violation complaints, she said.

The Directorate is continuously working to prevent counterfeiting and adulteration along with ensuring the supply of essential products in the market and keeping the price-situation normal, the Premier added. 

She urged all traders and consumers to become aware of their rights and discharge their duties with utmost sincerity.

She firmly believed that all the officials and employees of the Directorate of National Consumers' Right Protection will play their due roles with dedication in order to deliver the benefits of consumer rights protection to every home.

She also called upon all to work together to build a developed and prosperous smart Bangladesh, as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, for the next generation.

The Premier wished the success of all programmes taken on the occasion of the 'World Consumer Rights Day-2023'.
