Workshop on sanitation held in Magura

A workshop on sanitation planning in Magura municipal town was held at the municipality auditorium on Wednesday.

Magura Municipal Panel Mayor Maqbool Hasan Makul was present as the chief guest on the occasion. Municipal Councilor Abu Reza Nantu, president of the related working committee, presided over the meeting.

Fariduzzaman Swapan, Project Manager of Practical Action Bangladesh NGO, Faisal Tarek, Assistant Program Officer, Abdul Karim of Practical Action Bangladesh, Rezaul Karim, Municipal Secretary, Uday Shankar Roy, Municipal Chief Accountant, Engineer Saiful Islam Hirok and others took part in the workshop.

At the workshop, views were expressed on various issues that need to be addressed for public sanitation. The project is being implemented in Magura Municipality by the non-governmental organization Practical Action Bangladesh with the financial support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

According to the workshop, there are 19,916 families living in Magura Municipality. Of these, 168,354 families use separate toilets. 1262 families use shared toilets. 300 families still defecate in the open. 

The objective of the universal sanitation system is to take the sanitation system to a stage where it ensures hygienic and safe sanitation for all. 

Not only that, a project has already been undertaken to make organic manure from it to convert human feces into resources. Under this project, a plant is being constructed in the suburban Shimulia area at a cost of Tk 11 crore.
