Workers crying in Kishoreganj

Mass transit has been stopped across the country since March 26 to prevent the spread of Corona virus. As a result, transport employeeswho were working on a daily wage basis became unemployed. They became jobless. Some of the workers are doing watchman’s duty, but most of them, are sitting at home unemployed. 

However, due to the welfare of these workers, there are billions of extortion from the transport sector nationwide. But it is difficult to find someone who would stand by these workers in this difficult time. According to sources, there are about 5,000 workers, including 2,200 enlisted under the Kishoreganj District Motor Workers Union.

On 7thApril, according to the direction of Md. Sarwar Murshed Chowdhury Deputy Commissioner District Motor Workers Union President and General Secretary submitted 1071NID card to the Project Implementation Officer. But despite the situation till now there was no relief distributed to help them overcome this situatuion.

According to source on April 8, there were 1,500 packets of food aid that was distributed by a joint project of Kishoreganj District Transport Owners Association and District Motor Vehicle Workers Union among the workers. The workers are getting frustrated because they did not received any assistance from the government or any relief fund.

Some workers at Gaital Inter-District Bus Stand and Batrish Bus Stand said that he has been starving with his family for several days.  Truck driver Khairul said thatthey are a family of six members. He lives in a rented house with 2 rooms. In this situation they do not know which one to think about the rent or the food for his children’s. They got no assistance from the government either.

Zahirul Islam, General Secretary of Kishoreganj District Motor Vehicle Workers Union said that since April 7th they have visited the Deputy Commissioner's Office and the Project Implementation Officer's office but they did not receive any assurance of relief or any assistance."

Kishoreganj District Motor Vehicle Workers Union President Kayshar Ahmed Kaiyum said, "We have not received any relief from the district administration so far." The government will surely take necessary steps to bring smile to the workers by providing relief and other assistance in this distressful situation.
