Workers block highway in Gazipur over unpaid wages, factory closure

UNB, Gazipur: Workers of a readymade garment factory blocked Dhaka–Mymensingh highway in Gazipur for around one hour on Tuesday morning protesting the sudden closure of their factory and demanding payment of dues.

The demonstration which began around 9am near the Bhogra Bypass area, disrupting  traffic for about an hour and causing a long tailback and suffering for commuters.

Police and army personnel later removed the workers from the highway and restored traffic by 10am.

According to police and workers, authorities of Rowa Fashions Ltd announced an indefinite shutdown without paying salaries for July.

When workers arrived for duty in the morning  they found a closure notice hanged at the main gate, triggering anger and frustration.

Officer-In-Charge of Bason Police Station said Shahin Khan said discussions with the factory management are underway regarding the workers’ demands.
