Dhaka Metropolitan Police recovered the bodies of two slaughtered children from a residence in Khilgaon area of the capital city on Saturday.
Police also rescued their mother with burn injuries on her body.
While undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Akhtarunnesa Popy, mother of the children, admitted that she killed her two babies.
Earlier, police confirmed that they did not find any evidence of a fire incident or forced entry at the residence.
Inspector Moshiur Rahman, Officer-in-charge of Khilgaon Police said, “We found the bodies of Jannat, 12, and her sister Alvi, 7, slaughtered.”
“We brought Popy to Dhaka Medical College Hospital”, he said.
Inspector Bachchu Mia of the DMCH's police outpost said, “Popy suffered 18 percent burns injuries on her body.”
While speaking to reporters at DMCH, Popy's father Abu Taleb said, “My daughter Popy had family disputes with her husband Mozammel Haque.” He separately lives in Munshiganj.
According to the family sources, Popy and Mozammel lived together for the first nine years after their marriage. But Popy recently shifted to a separate house.
Mozammel said, “I come to Dhaka every Friday to see my family. But I could not visit this week, because I was engaged with some other issues.”
“I spoke to my wife at around 9:30pm on Friday lastly. During the conversation, I assured her that I would visit her on Monday,” he claimed.
He further said that his wife was not angry at all when he talked to her over phone.
He said, “I never thought she would commit such a thing.” About the motive of the incident, police officials said that they would look into all issues while investigating the cases.
In a latest development, Popy admitted of killing her two children. She claimed that she was frustrated over the ongoing financial crisis in her family.
Popy also alleged that her husband was not providing her family expense properly. As her life became unbearable due to financial crisis, she tried to kill herself after killing her two babies, she described.
“I killed my babies by slaughtering with machete used in the kitchen room”, she said while crying. Responding to a question, Popy said, “I was failing to bear educational expense of my two children. My husband was giving me only Tk 1,100 Tk per month. But with this very small amount of money, I could not do anything.” “At one stage of terrible life, I decided to kill myself after killing my babies”, she continued.
