A 35-year old woman tried to set herself and her three children on fire by pouring kerosene in front of the National Press Club in the city on Saturday in protest of not getting justice over land dispute. We are shocked that such a suicide attempt happened in the capital Dhaka.

Police rescued them from the spot and admitted them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Shirin got frustrated after failing to get justice from the authorities in her locality over a land, according to media report. She went to local police and political representative to resolve the issue, but to no avail.

We do not want to see

the repetition of such

incident

anymore

The woman alleged that they bought four kathas of land from one Mohammad Hannan in 2015 at Tk 12.40 lakh. The family built a two-storied building on the land and had been living there. Shirin said that she received a notice from Basic Bank eight months ago; the notice said that the land was mortgaged for loan from the bank.

She contacted Hannan over the bank notice and asked for resolving the issue.  But, instead of helping the woman, he asked her to leave the land. The police tried to resolve the dispute, but failed and then asked Shirin to move to the court since the land dispute was not within the police jurisdiction.

Currently such incident is alarmingly on the rise across the country despite the existence of specific social and judicial framework for addressing the issue. Hannan, who took loan from the bank, should have paid back the loans. But he did not repay the bank loan before selling the four kathas of land to victims.

Earlier on July 5, a businessman Gazi Anis killed committed suicide by being set on fire on the National Press Club premises as Henolux Group chairman Nurul Amin and his wife Fatema Amin embezzled crores of taka from him.

We do not want to see the repetition of such incident anymore. Police should nab Hannan and put on him trial immediately. The government should protect the victim family and ensure justice in a speedy manner. Local public representatives should extend all-out support to helpless family members and stand by them with love and respect.
