Speakers at a workshop demanded setting up of more permanent and temporary police camps and deploy additional law enforcers in the crime-prone district Jhenidah when the government was moving to withdraw the camps gradually throughout the country.

Organized by Jhenidah district police, the workshop was held at Jhenidah district Shilpakala academy auditorium with JJhenidah Superintendent of Police Mohammad Hasanuzzaman in the chair.

A several hundred people including the lawmakers, high government and non-governmental organization activists, political leaders, local elected body members and media activists participated in the workshop.

Lawmaker from Jhenidah-1 constituency and president of district Awami League unit Abdul Hyee attended the discussion as the chief guest.

Lawmaker of Jhenidah-Magura reserved women seats Khaleda Khanam, Deputy Commissioner Saroj Kumar Nath and others attended as special guests.

The participants in the discussion said the government had established a total of 153 police camps in south-western parts of the district in Khulna range under the direct supervision of the then home minister Mohammad Nasim in 2001. Of them 23 permanent camps and seven temporary police camps were set up in Jhenidah district.

Due to frequent movement of the law enforcing agency men from the police camps abide police stations (PSs), the people resumes their business and the markets were almost free from the toll collector engaged in collecting money from the businessmen and well to do farmers.

Chief guest opined that the question about withdrawal of the police camps are absurd as the extremists will be active again in the once crime-prone area titled Jhenidah and surrounding districts. It will be a direct challenge against the law and order.

The participants had urged upon the government to set up more camps and deploy more personnel for a better environment where the people will enjoy the real freedom earned by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman under the strong and confident leadership of the Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina.
