In the last part of the Bengali month of Kartik, the whole southern region including Barisal goes into the grip of winter. With the onset of winter, sale of winter clothes are going in full swing in the local market.

The sidewalk winter clothing market of the district has already become abuzz with the arrival of low to middle income group.

Visiting in person, lower and middle class families were seen busy buying winter clothes in the temporary shops on the sidewalk near the pond of Barishal City Corporation in city.

Besides, at City Market, Mohsin Market and other markets in the city, warm clothes including new and old jackets, sweaters, shirts, pants, blankets and other kinds of winter clothes are being sold in huge numbers.

It was found that, small and medium warm cloth traders of the city start their business in a festive atmosphere on the sidewalks every winter.

Many traveling vendors have already started selling winter clothes roaming in different neighborhoods with various types of warm clothes on their vans.

According to traders, many people from rural areas flock to the sidewalk shops in Barisal as the prices of winter clothes sold on the sidewalks are cheap and the clothes are of pretty good quality.

Kabir Hossain, an old cloth merchant who does business on the sidewalk in front of Barishal City Corporation, said, “Every year I sell old winter clothes on this sidewalk”.

Shahid Sikder, who bought clothes from a van on the sidewalk of Bibi Pukurpar, said, “I bought a sweater for Tk 100 only. To buy such a sweater in the big markets would require at least a thousand taka. Since I could not afford to buy winter clothes from the big markets, I bought winter clothes from the sidewalk shop.”

Rickshaw driver Kabir Hossain said the sidewalk shop is a shopping mall for the poor. So poor people like his buy winter clothes from these shops every year to keep them warm during the bettering cold.
