Wild elephant dies from electrocution in Teknaf

A wild elephant died after being electrocuted in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar district on Friday morning.

The incident took place at 5:30am at Konarpara of Ward No. 9 under Baharchhara Union in Teknaf Upazila, said Divisional Officer of Cox's Bazar South Forest Division Md Sarwar Alam.

The male mammal was aged between 25 and 30 years.

Speaking to the locals, Sarwar Alam said the wild elephant entered the locality in search of food from the local barren hills at Konarpara in Teknaf in the morning. When the elephant came near the house of one Md Hossain, it suddenly fell to the ground and began to thrash about.

Locals saw the incident and rushed to the spot. At that time, they saw the elephant on fire with electric shock and turned off the electricity switch in the house. But the elephant died at one point. 

The official of the forest division said, “A team of the forest department visited the spot after hearing the news from the locals in the morning. Some electrical wires were found at the scene. Initially, it is believed that the elephant died due to electric shock.”

Sarwar Alam said the local veterinary surgeon experts have been informed to know the real cause of death of the elephant. The cause of death can be confirmed after receiving the post-mortem report.

He said legal action will be taken if any complaint is related to the death of the elephant.

Sarwar said arrangements will be made to bury the elephant locally after the autopsy.
