A wild elephant has died after its trunk reportedly came in contact with a live electric wire in a hilly area of Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar. The incident took place at Khonda Kata area in Pashchim Pankhali under the Hnila union on Friday.

Locals said a wild elephant that came down from the hill in search of food in the morning died after the elephant's trunk got stuck with the electric wire. Hundreds of locals heard elephants scream and crowded the area to get a glimpse of the giant animal which had perished tragically.

Wildlife researcher Shital Kumar Nath said the 45- to 50-year-old elephant died of electrocution while searching for food. He said the elephant died due to unplanned power lines. There were no signs of illness or other injuries on the elephant's body.

Teknaf Range Officer Syed Ashiq Ahmed said an inspection of the spot had confirmed that the elephant had died due to electrocution. There is no sign of injury anywhere on the body except for a scar on the top of the elephant's head.

He said it was a kind of murder. Because the power lines have been drawn low on the elephant movement road in the hilly areas. Necessary steps are being taken in this regard, said Ashiq Ahmed.
