Wheat cultivation less than target in Chuadanga

Chuadanga Agriculture Department motivated the farmers to cultivate wheat, but growers farmed other crops in winter season instead of wheat, so the target of wheat cultivation was not fulfil in the areas. 

According to Agriculture Extension Department, a total of 1007 hectares of land was fixed to cultivated wheat in the district this winter season. But over 932 hectares of land was taken under wheat cultivation in 4 uapzilas of the district.

 Of the total, 50 hectares of land were cultivated wheat in sadar upazila, 439 hectares in Alamdanga upazila, 220 hectares of land in Damurhuda upazila and 223 hectares of land in Jibonnagar upazila. 

It is learnt, 4,007.6 metric tons of wheat was produced by cultivating of 932 hectares of land in the district. Upazila wise wheat production breaks up were-215 metric tons in Sadar upazila, 1887.7 metric tons in Alamdanga uipazila, 946 metric tons in Damurhuda upazila and 958.9 metric tons in Jibannagar upazila.  

Amirul Islam, a farmer of Notun Bastopur in Damurhuda upazila of the district said that  he cultivated wheat on 1.5 bighas of land and produced 18 mounds of wheat in the winter season. 

Hafizur Rahman Joarder, a cultivator of village Boalmary in Sadar upazila said that  he  has produced 17 mounds of wheat by cultivating it on 1 bigha of land. 

Bevash Chandra Saha, Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Department said that government gave incentive to the growers of wheat. The officials of the Agriculture Department were trying to achieve the target but failed due to cultivation of maize by the farmers. 

He also said, farmers may return to cultivate wheat for local demand of wheat.
