The government has taken a massive undertaking to improve the quality of education in haor (wetland) areas by developing the infrastructure and increasing the accommodation of educational institutions located there. For a long time, the literacy rate and quality of education in haor areas are lagging behind the rest of the country.

The Tk. 401.27 crore project will be implemented by December 2021. The main activities of the project are construction of nine hostels and separate buildings for principals and teachers. The project also aims at establishing IT cell, library, academic building, laboratory and other necessary equipment. The lack of quality teachers must be mitigated as well through proper training programs and increase in salaries.

The communication and transport

system of the haor areas need to be

improved in order to reduce the high

number of student dropouts every year

The government must pay special attention to the education of girls as well as those living below the poverty line. The number of girls' school is much lower than that of the boys or general schools in haor areas. As a result, girls’ enrolment rates are lower and their dropout rates are high. Education must be ensured for all, including children with disabilities in order to create equal opportunity for them.

The communication and transport system of the haor areas need to be improved in order to reduce the high number of student dropouts every year. Not only that, the lack of electricity, drinking water and sanitation facilities in the haor areas have to be kept in mind when taking up development projects in the area.

The vulnerability of the haor areas to annual flooding is a big disadvantage for people living there. Priority must be given to flood management in 29 haors as well as the agricultural promotion and income generation activities. Without ensuring these, the quality of life for the residents of the wetland areas cannot be improved.
