‘Well accepted EC to be formed despite BNP’s non-cooperation’

A well accepted Election Commission (EC) to be formed with the names so far has been received by the search committee.

Although the BNP so far has not recommended any names to the search committee but a well accepted EC could be formed.

Agriculture Minister Dr M Abdur Razzaque made this comment while responding to a query from the journalists after a view exchange meeting with the officials of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Sylhet regions at Sylhet Circuit House on Tuesday.

“We hope that we will get a powerful EC as the search committee will submit the names of some eligible and dignified persons for the commission,” he further said.

The proposed EC will hold free and fair elections according to the expectations of the nation and that would be also praiseworthy throughout the world, said the minister.

Criticizing the BNP, the ruling party leader said there is no alternative of dialogue to resolve any dispute, but BNP has done harm themselves and the nation in the name of movement and boycotting the elections.

Amid serious tension over Ukraine, Dr Razzaque said US president Joe Biden and the Russian leader Bladmir Putin is remain involve in discussion to resolve the matter whereas BNP is continuously boycotting the dialogue and discussion  which is nothing but a non political and undemocratic attitude,” he said.

Meanwhile, the government has been working to bring huge fellow land in Syhet region under cultivation adding that the agriculture potentiality is huge in the region.

The government has already taken a project at a cost of Taka 226 crore aiming to extend irrigation facilities during the Boro season, Dr Razzaque said adding that the project will bring massive change to the agriculture sector in Sylhet region.

The demand of rice is increasing day by day, he said, saying that “so, we are working to enhance rice cultivation and exploiting fellow land for raising rice production.”

Shamima Shahriar MP, Director General of the DAE Benjir Alam, Divisional Commissioner of Sylhet Muhammad Mosharraf Hossain and Additional Director of DAE Sylhet Dilip Kumar Adhikary, among others, spoke on the occasion.

A total of over 12.50 lakh hectares of land remains under agriculture in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj and Moulvibazar districts where arable land is only 7.63 lakh hectares.
