Gas supply to southern parts of Dhaka City and its adjoining areas, Narayanganj and Munshiganj may experience disruption or low pressure in gas supply for a week due to inspection work of the Bakhrabad-Siddhirganj gas transmission pipeline, said Titas Gas authority.

Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited issued a notice on Saturday stating that repair work to its pipeline will start on Sunday and finish on Nov 12.

Currently, factory production is being hampered due to lack of gas supply to the industrial factories of Gazipur, Narayanganj, Savar and other areas of the country. Now Titas supplies 160 crore cubic feet against the demand of 180 to 190 crore cubic feet of gas per day. The announcement of supply disruption has worried factory owners.

According to a statement from Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited, the areas where consumers may face gas supply disruption include some areas in the southern part of Dhaka city -- Zinjira, Keraniganj, Meghnaghat, Sonargaon, Haripur, Narayanganj and Munshiganj.

Gas Transmission Company Limited (GTCL) will conduct ‘Intelligent Pigging’, an inspection technique propelled through a pipeline to gather data on the presence and location of corrosion or other irregularities on the inner walls of the pipe, in the 60-kilometre long 30-inch-diameter transmission line during the period, said Titas Gas.

Consumers and factory owners have expressed concern over the extended disruption to the gas supply. The low gas pressure in the area has already forced many factories to use alternate fuel sources to keep the production running.

However, Titas has given no assurances that the situation will improve once they clean the transmission line.
