WCCU rescues five ‘Dahuk’ from bird hunter

The Wildlife Crime Control Unit (WCCU) of the Forest Department has conducted a raid in Gazipur and rescued five white-breasted waterhens, popularly known as ‘Dahuk’, from a bird hunter. 

On secret information, the WCCU carried out the raid at Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur on Sunday (July 2, 2023) and rescued the birds. A WCCU team conducted the drive following the direction from the WCCU’s Dhaka office. 

The WCCU team also picked up the bird hunter during the drive. Later, he was released as he promised not to continue the bird hunting. Sadekul Islam of the WCCU confirmed the matter to the Bangladesh Post.  

Sadekul Islam said that after rescue, the WCCU team released the birds to nature.  

Nargis Sultana Liza, Wildlife Inspector at Bangladesh Forest Department; said that from now the WCCU will conduct raid in Dhaka and adjoining areas in order to save the wildlife. She said that the Forest Department and the Wildlife Crime Control Unit (WCCU) under the department are working sincerely to curb the illegal wildlife trade, wildlife hunting and other wildlife-related crimes in the country.Emphasizing on the need to engage youths in creating awareness about conservation of wildlife, experts on wildlife and officials of Forest Department called upon the people to work for tackling illegal wildlife trade and extending help to the WCCU by providing information with evidence. They also called for raising awareness across the country in order to combat wildlife crime.
