WB interested in developing Bangladeshi livestock sector

The World Bank has expressed interest in continuing cooperation in the development of the livestock sector in Bangladesh.

The delegation, led by World Bank Country Director Mercy Miyang Tembon, expressed interest in a meeting with Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim at his office in the Secretariat on Wednesday afternoon.

Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Taufiqul Arif and Subol Bose Moni, Director General of the Department of Livestock Manzoor Mohammad Shahzada, Martien Van Nieuwcoop, Global Director of the World Bank's Agriculture and Food Global Practice Abdur Rahim and the project's chief technical coordinator Golam Rabbani was present at the meeting.

Highlighting the progress of the Livestock and Dairy Development Project, the Fisheries and Livestock Minister said, "Work on the Livestock and Dairy Development Project under implementation in collaboration with the World Bank is progressing faster than in the past. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is regularly monitoring the project. Although the work has been temporarily slow, it is no more. Under the project, about Tk 600 crore cash incentives have been given to the affected farmers in Covid-19. 4,200 livestock service providers have been selected in the project area. 3,000 producer groups have been formed involving more farms, under which 360 mobile factory clinics have been procured to bring veterinary services to the doorsteps of farms out of which 61 have been distributed recently. One of the important part of the project, many field level activities have been completed under the project, livestock expansion policies, livestock insurance policy formulation, animal registration and identification systems and database development are underway.”

"In recent times, the livestock sector of Bangladesh has undergone tremendous changes in various sectors including poultry and dairy”, he added.

Mercy Myang Tembon said at the time, "Bangladesh is moving fast. Many countries in the world are learning from Bangladesh. The country's agricultural sector in particular has come a long way. However, there is room for further progress, especially in the livestock sector. There is much more to go." There is an opportunity to do something. 

This requires speeding up the implementation of livestock and dairy development projects. "
