WAVE Foundation has taken fish farming programme to increase the production of fish by using modern fish farming method in Chuadanga.
The programme is being financed by Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF). WAVE Foundation is working with cooperation from Chuadanga District Department of Fisheries to increase the fish production and meet the demand of protein.
Fish production is being increased by using modern fish farming method by training men and women in Damurhuda sadar upazila, Karpashdanga union, Perkrishnopur-Madna union and Ailhash union in Alamdanga.
Fisheries Officer of Chuadanga WAVE Foundation Sayed-ur-Rahman said a total of 81 exhibitions were organized in 2023-24 fiscal year that were financed by PKSF. Along with that, three skill development training programme were implemented for teaching fish farming of advanced system. Activities are ongoing to increase fish farming in three upazilas and 15 unions of the district. 10 centers for farming G-3 variety of Rohu Carp (Rui), five centers to increase farming of Chinese Carp, 10 centers for mix farming of local variety of Pabda and Carp fish in semi-intensive aquaculture method, five centers for Carp fattening fish farming in semi-intensive aquaculture method, 10 centers for farming flavorless Silver Catfish (Pangasius) and Tilapia fish under advanced system, five centers for farming fish in abandoned ponds after renovating them, 2 centers for fish farming with natural feeds, two centers for farming high priced fish under intensive aquaculture method, five centers for farming small varieties of fishes, 5 brood banks for fishes with high protein and one center to sell fish produced by the members under advanced system were built in the district. Moreover, 10 centers to create entrepreneurs who would farm fish fries were also built. Along with that, there is one oxygenated van for carrying fish fries.
Sheikh Sadi, resident of Boyra village under Karpashdanga union in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga district, said he is faming fishes in 70 bighas of pond with the assistance of WAVE Foundation. He also have brood bank of carplet in his pond. He is selling the fishes produced in his pond to WAVE Foundation. However, as there is no enough rain, he has to keep water supply proper using shallow machine. As a reason, the prices of fishes that he produced have increased.
Khokon Hossain, Liton and Shahidul of Boyra village said WAVE Foundation has helped them by buying them fishes to increase the production of carplets. They are going to cultivate these fishes in their ponds, they said.
Anowara Khatun, resident of of Juranpur union of the same upazila, said WAVE Foundation has helped him to farm fishes in tanks by giving her training so that she can meet the demand of protein for her family. They nurture the fishes and eat them after they get big. Her family did not have to buy fish in the last two years, she said.
Fisheries Officer of Chuadanga, Depok Kumar Paul, said there is a shortage of 1,620 metric tonnes of fishes in the district this year. The fish farming programme of Chuadanga WAVE Foundation is helping to meet the demand of fishes of Chuadanga people.
