Rain lashed almost the entire country for three consecutive days bringing much-needed respite from the severe heatwave. The long-awaited rainfall has brought great relief to the city people. Bangladesh Meteorological Department forecasts the country will continue to experience moderate rain to downpours.
A severe to very severe heatwave is unlikely to sweep the capital Dhaka and other parts of the country. This is good news indeed.
However, with clouds hanging over the city, the de-silting work of the clogged drains is yet to start which, the people fear, will lead to waterlogging in many parts of the city once again. A spell of moderate rain for only one or two hours cause severe waterlogging in many areas of the city.
With monsoon coming Dhaka dwellers brace for the same old problem of waterlogging. No effective measure has been taken yet for a comprehensive solution to the long-standing hazard of the megacity. Therefore, we fear a dreadful situation will arise there in the upcoming monsoon due to waterlogging.

problem of waterlogging
Some vehicles break down and pedestrians have to wade through knee-deep water, and traffic almost comes to a halt as major city roads go under water. We the city people have to suffer a lot due to waterlogging during monsoon every year, but the authorities concerned appear indifferent to ending the nagging problem.
Either the two city corporations or Dhaka WASA cannot assure us that they will give us relief from the waterlogging crisis in the upcoming monsoon. Many areas in the capital get waterlogged due to the torrential rains with the onset of monsoon throwing the normal life out of gear every year.
Triggered by active monsoon, Dhaka city sees heavy rain which leads to severe traffic snarl causing immense sufferings for the commuters. This chaotic scene is common in the city during the monsoon after hours of rain. People, mainly office-goers and students, who go out of home for various works, are found themselves in trouble due to waterlogging and traffic jam.
The maintenance work of Dhaka’s drainage system and canals has already been handed over to the Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City Corporation to eliminate waterlogging in the capital. Besides, the canals and water bodies under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, RAJUK and Water Development Board will also be handed over to the two city corporations. The two city corporations will have to take immediate measures to free the capital from waterlogging.
