Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain has claimed that relief has returned to most areas of Chattogram due to swift and effective measures taken to address temporary waterlogging caused by the canal renovation project.

According to the mayor, the removal of temporary dams built in several canals under the initiative of the city corporation allowed stagnant water to drain quickly, helping normalize the situation.

From Wednesday morning, the mayor visited several waterlogging-prone areas of the city. After inspecting the overall situation, he said that except for Probortok Mor, drainage remained normal in most parts of the city and there was no major waterlogging elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Mir Shahe Alam is expected to inspect the waterlogging situation at Probortok Mor in the evening.

Based on the mayor’s on-site instructions, temporary dams installed at Hijra Khal, Jamal Khan Khal and Muradpur Box Culvert were removed. As a result, water drained rapidly from areas including Katalganj, Chawkbazar, Jamal Khan, Muradpur and Bahaddarhat.

Sources said the canal excavation, renovation and infrastructure development works are being implemented by the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) under the supervision of the Bangladesh Army 34 Engineer Brigade. Temporary dams had been constructed at different points to facilitate the work, but heavy rainfall obstructed water flow and caused waterlogging.

During the inspection, the mayor expressed dissatisfaction over the absence of responsible representatives at the project site in Probortok Mor and instructed them to supervise the work more responsibly.

Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain said temporary problems had arisen due to the ongoing development works, but these were resolved quickly through coordinated efforts.

“We are working in coordination to bring quick relief to city residents. Once the project is completed within the stipulated time, waterlogging will be brought under permanent control,” he said.

He also directed all concerned agencies to strengthen coordination and complete the work quickly so that residents can be spared from waterlogging during the upcoming monsoon season.

Meanwhile, Patenga Weather Office said 60 millimeters of rainfall had been recorded in the city in the last 24 hours until 12 noon. Due to pressure differences over the northern Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas, rainfall has continued in Chattogram and other coastal regions.

The seaports of Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to hoist Local Warning Signal No. 3. Fishing boats and trawlers have been asked to remain close to the coast and move cautiously until further notice.

Due to rain, waterlogging occurred in several low-lying areas including No. 2 Gate, Muradpur and Katalganj. Water on roads disrupted traffic movement, causing suffering for commuters and residents.
