Water of major rivers recedes further

Water levels of major rivers, except the Dharla and Teesta, marked further fall at all points in the Brahmaputra basin in northern Bangladesh during the last 24 hours ending at 9 am Saturday, reports BSS.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) officials said water levels of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river continued to fall during the last 24 hours in the river basin despite moderate monsoon rains in recent days.

A bulletin of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of BWDB said the recorded rainfalls during the past 24 hours till 9am today were 56mm at Jalpaiguri and 45mm at Cherrapunji points in the upstream of the northwestern Indian states.

Besides, 16mm rainfalls were recorded at Rangpur, 14mm at Kawnia and 25mm at Dewanganj points in the downstream during the period.

During the last 24 hours, water levels of the Brahmaputra remained steady at Noonkhawa while marked fall by 9cm at Chilmari, Ghogt fell by 6cm at Gaibandha and Teesta marked rise by 8cm at Dalia and Dharla rose by 13cm at Kurigram points.

Water levels of the Jamuna marked fall by 17cm at Fulchhari in Gaibandha, 16cm at Bahadurabad in Jamalpur, 14cm at Sariakandi in Bogura, 15cm at Kazipur and 9cm at Sirajganj points in the Brahmaputra basin during the period.

However, water levels of all major rivers were flowing well below their respective danger marks (DM) at all points in the basin at 9am today.

The Dharla was flowing 41cm below the DM at Kurigram, Brahmanpara 156cm at Noonkhawa and 118cm at Chilmari, Teesta 30cm at Dalia and Ghaghot 131cm below the DM at Gaibandha points at 9 am.

Besides, the Jamuna was flowing below the DM by 111cm at Fulchhari, 114cm at Bahadurabad, 76cm at Sariakandi, 60cm at Kazipur and 70cm at Sirajganj points in the Brahmaputra basin at 9 am today.

Talking to BSS on Saturday, Chief Engineer for Rangpur Zone of BWDB Jyoti Prosad Ghosh ruled out the possibility of another flood this season in the Brahmaputra basin.

Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Zakir Hossain said the district administrations are monitoring the situation in flood-prone areas across Rangpur division where people are leading normal life after recession of floodwaters three weeks ago.
