Water of Jamuna keeps rising

40,000 people affected in Bogura’s Sariakandi and Shonatala

The waters level of Jamuna River continues to rise incessantly due to upstream flow recently. As a result, over 40,000 families in Sariakandi, Sonatala and Dhunat upazilas of Bogura have been affected and crops of 100 hectares of land have been damaged.

Due to the flooding of the area, water has entered into the houses of people. So, many of the helpless people have taken shelter on the local dam while others are living inside their submerged houses with difficulties. 

Bogura district administration has already allocated 120 metric tonnes of rice for these areas through the office of the Relief and Rehabilitation Officer.

Meanwhile, on Monday the Jamuna River was flowing about 32 cm above the danger level at Sariakandi point of Bogura. About 74 hectares of crop land in Sariakandi Upazila has been flooded while, 38,000 people in 56 villages of the upazila have been affected. Water has flooded 10 educational institutions too.

In this condition, 40,000 people from Chaluabari, Kajla, Kornibari and Bohail villages of Sariakandi Union; Chandanbaisha, Kamalpur, Kutubpur of Hatsherpur Union; and 56 other villages of Sadar Union along the river have been stranded.

At the same time, 600 families of Pakulla union, 1,050 families of Tekani Chukainagar union and 125 families of Madhupur union of Sonatala upazila are in waterlogged condition.  

Planted Aman, Aman seedbed, jute, Masakalai pulse and vegetable crops of 25 hectares of land in Sonatala have been damaged by the water. This information has been received from the upazila administration sources.

Executive Engineer of the Bogura Water Development Board Mahbubur Rahman said the Jamura water level continued to rise due to rains in the upstream but, there was no danger of the flood control dam collapsing. The water level started rising from mid-August and on Thursday it crossed the danger line.

According to local sources, floodwaters have inundated low-lying areas adjacent to flood control dams in 7 unions along the Jamuna River in Sariakandi and a total of 56 villages in the chhar region. The highest water inflow was in 14 villages of the Bohail Union. Extensive crop lands of 10 more villages in Kajla Union and Chaluabari Union each have been flooded too. 

Residents of Char Karnibari, Chaluabari area in Sariakandi upazila said that water has not yet entered the houses in the char area as they are high. Being on the banks of the river, their crop lands have been submerged by the water.

Simon, Shamim, Rafiqul and Moyez Ali, all residents of Sariakandi Upazila Sadar, said they planted paddy on low land adjacent to the river flood control dam but, as the water level has risen now, they are getting damaged by the water.

Visiting Ghughumari area adjacent to the Kutubpur dam, it was seen that water has entered the houses in some of the neighborhoods between the river and the dam. People in the area have moved out of their homes and taken refuge on the dam.

Locals said the water rose in a few days and entered their houses. The road to the movement is now under throat high water and they are traveling by boat. The crops of their land are also on the verge of being wasted. 

Sariakandi Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdul Halim said on Sunday afternoon that the floods had damaged crops on 74 hectares of land, including Ropa Aman. At the same time, the lands along the river have been submerged. 

Sariakandi Chaluabari Union Parishad (UP) chairman Shawkat Ali said about 2,500 people from 600 families in Dalika, Hatbari, Noarpara Char have become homeless. A few thousand more people from other chhars are also waterlogged. 

Sariakandi Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Russell Mia said 38,000 people from 9,000 families in the chhar area, including 56 villages in Chhar Union and a few coastal unions in Sariakandi Upazila, have been inundated due to the floodwaters flowing over the Jamuna. 

Food and financial assistance have already been provided. The Upazila Nirbahi Officer said that necessary preparations have been made to deal with the prolonged floods.

Meanwhile, a total of 25 hectares of land in Amjhup, Amjol has been planted in East Sujaitpur, Radhakantpur, Khatiamari, Baluapara, Tekani Chukainagar Union, Sonlia, Mohabbaterpara, Khabulia, Baliadanga and Balua Union have also been affected severel.

Sonatala Upazila Agriculture Officer Masud Ahmed said, “According to the weather forecast, the flood waters are expected to recede very soon. Seedbed of ‘Gainja’ variety of rice is being prepared. We hope we can recover the amount of paddy that has been damaged.”
