To rid the city dwellers of woes, development work worth Tk 103 crore is underway with an action plan to cease water logging in Dhaka city within three hours despite heavy rains, said Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.

He made these remarks after the inauguration of Sheikh Russell Park at Jatrabari in the capital on Wednesday.

He said that the DSCC is working on short, medium and long term plans to relieve the people from water logging as soon as possible. In case of very heavy rainfall, water logging will be eliminated within three hours while in case of quite heavy and normal rainfall it will be made clear of water within two hours and an hour respectively.

Regarding the action plan, Barrister Sheikh Taposh said, “In the initial stage, our short-term task is to clean up the waste in the form of piles so that there is an opportunity for drainage and flow of water. In the areas where infrastructure needs to be developed, sewerage needs to be expanded and reservoir space needs to be expanded, medium-term activities have been undertaken through infrastructure development.”

Mentioning a master plan, he said that long-term activities will be highly planned as the unplanned Dhaka does not have the capacity to suck up the rainfall during the monsoon.  “Thus, we happen to fall into victim of water logging as soon as it rains", he added.

After inaugurating the Sheikh Russell Park, the Mayor said, "The inauguration of the park in the name of Shaheed Sheikh Russell at this Jatrabari intersection has created a pleasant environment here so that the people of the area can get a free place and have a cheerful time", said the Mayor.

Meanwhile, Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Badrul Amin, Chief Engineer Rezaur Rahman, Secretary Akramuzzaman, Chief Property Officer Russell Sabrin, Supervising Engineer KaziMdBorhan Uddin, Abul Hashem and others were present, among others.
