Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said that the accumulated water has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes due to dumping of garbage and construction of dams in different parts of the canal to implement CDA waterlogging project.
He made the remarks while exchanging views with reporters on the progress of his first 100-day crash programme after taking charge as CCC mayor. The programme was held at the KB Abdus Sattar auditorium in Anderkilla on Thursday afternoon.
He said that in the 100-day mosquito eradication campaign, 2 workers in each ward are engaged in spraying liquid medicine with fogger (smoke) spray and 5 hand sprays. A team has been formed under the leadership of Professor Dr. Rabiul Islam of Chittagong University to determine the effectiveness of liquid medicine in mosquito eradication.
Necessary decisions and steps will be taken after receiving their report.
The mayor said, “On February 15, I took over the responsibility of the mayor, while CCC was under a debt of Tk 1,000 crore and stuggling with various other problems. Then I started the 100 day crash programme.”
Although the CDA has the overall responsibility of cleaning more than 3 feet wide ditches and canals under the waterlogging elimination project, CCC has cleaned the garbage as well as lifted soil from many large ditches and canals in the interest of eradicating mosquito breeding growth and water flow. 10,600 tonns of garbage has been dumped in 2,120 trips.
CCC mayor said 4,011 LED lights have been installed on 2,960 poles in 76 kilometers of 30 roads.
Tk 67 lakh 25 thousand 110 has been paid to 33 retired employees of CCC since last 15th February. 22 crore 17 lakh 97 thousand 860 taka, 1 crore 12 lakh 34 thousand 416 taka of road lights and 2 crore 38 lakh 77 thousand 774 taka of various installations have been paid from the outstanding bills of the contractors.
The design of 5 income generating projects has been called for to increase the financial capacity of CCC, while 37 more projects are under review. The first dose was given to 2 lakh 53 thousand 572 people in 41 wards of CCC and the second dose was given to 1 lakh 83 thousand 598 people. The CCC Executive Magistrate Court has disposed of 926 out of 2,086 arbitration cases in 100 days. Of these, 14 have been associated with 44 previous complaints. 241 cases were disposed of and fines amounting to Tk 1,84,600 were collected in 68 mobile Court raids, while 17 eviction raids were conducted.
CCC CEO Kazi Muhammad Mozammel Haque delivered the welcome address. Chattogram Press Club President Ali Abbas, General Secretary Chowdhury Farid, CCC Panel Mayor Abdus Sabur Liton, Gias Uddin, Afroza Kalam, Mayor's Private Secretary Muhammad Abul Hashem and other councilors were present at the meeting.
