Water-logging leaves over 1,000 acres of land fallow

Due to lack of water drainage system in Santhia Upazila of Pabna, about 1000 bigha land of 2 beels remains uncultivated throughout the year. On the other hand, the farmers are not able to cultivate any crops including winter crops due to the land being covered with weeds and mud.

It is known that about 1000 bigha land in Vedagari Beel of Goalbaria village and Kumra Beel of Golabari, Gangarampur, Miapur villages of Kshetupara union of the upazila is filled with water and kachuripana throughout the year. As a result, the farmer's land remains uncultivated year after year.

Going to the Beel area on the surface, it can be seen that there is still a lot of water and debris in the Beel. As a result, the farmers of Beel area have been deprived of planting winter crops including seeds this year.

Many farmers including Motahar, Rajab Ali, Joddar Ali, Abdul Hai, Akhtar and Sultan of Goalbari, Miyapur, Gangarampur and Golabari villages said that about 1000 bigha of uncultivated lands of 2 Beels are lying and the common farmers are suffering due to not being able to produce crops. On the other hand, farmers are facing food crisis, as they cannot cultivate their own land.

Farmers of the area said that as per the instructions of the Prime Minister, not even 1 inch of suitable land for cultivation can be left. However, hundreds of acres of land in this area are left uncultivated due to lack of water drainage system. The farmers are drawing the attention of local parliamentarians, upazila chairman, upazila executive officers and others so that necessary measures can be taken.

Santhia Upazila Agriculture Officer Sanjib Kumar Goswami upon asking said that the Kumra Beel drainage canal has been abandoned and the waterlogging has occurred. Renovation of the drainage canal will alleviate the waterlogging. For this, local public representatives should come forward.
