As the two city corporations of the capital have taken measures to control the mosquito-borne health hazard, steps by these organisations are now visible in different parts of the city.

Visiting the capital’s Mirpur road on Saturday this correspondent found a north city corporation lorry spraying chemical mixed water on the road, later the water fell into the drain.

A representative of the city corporation who was monitoring the program said that initially the water spray is supposed to clean the road and reduce the dust on it but there is a mixture of chemicals with the water which will not only clean the road but will destroy the Aedes mosquito larva.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam has started a mass awareness campaign against dengue. The campaign has been initiated in the wake of recent dengue outbreak. Meanwhile, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has started a 15-day programme to introduce diagnostic testing facilities to confirm dengue infection. The testing facilities that began on Monday would be available in all the 57 wards of DSCC. According to DSCC sources, a total of 68 mobile medical teams are working to identify potential suspected dengue-infected patients and refer them to 476 health centres where primary treatment would be available.

It is to be noted, a new variety of dengue has gripped the country this time with dozens of patients reporting to hospitals every day. The only good news is the new variety is not as fatal as dengue of the previous years. Because of this characteristic, death rate this year is quite low. According to many health experts, people are coming to hospitals more out of panic than for any real cause to worry about.
