The judiciary has taken an initiative to run a 'virtual court', the first of its kind in Bangladesh. We welcome the initiative which has, in fact, become a milestone in the country’s judiciary. Citizens too have welcomed this initiative and that is evident on the social media platforms.

Even though this system is new in Bangladesh, it is already prevalent in different countries of the world. We are glad that despite the delay, the judiciary of Bangladesh has taken the initiative to take advantage of technology. There is no alternative to building a dynamic and participatory justice system to keep pace with the ever-modernising world.

It cannot be denied that the virtual justice process in the country has been initiated because of a special situation. However, the step taken is undoubtedly highly desirable. Its effects will also be far-reaching and long-lasting.

The manner the proceedings of the high and lower courts were simultaneously suspended amid the coronavirus outbreak was almost unprecedented.

Once these problems are solved,

the system will undoubtedly be a

benefit for the justice system

Again, there was no alternative to this to prevent the spread of the deadly virus. We saw the Chief Justice had taken an initiative to start court proceedings at a limited level maintaining social distancing. But due to the reluctance of various persons concerned, it was postponed within a day.

The outcome of the ‘virtual court’ system has two sides. On one hand, many lawyers have welcomed the initiative to move court proceedings online. In this way they will be able to maintain their livelihoods during the nationwide shutdown. And on the other hand, judges have criticised the shortcomings of the process.

One such shortcoming is incorrect information in most submitted petitions. Also, some have complained about the excess time consumption for proceedings and limitations caused by technical issues.

Once these problems are solved, the system will undoubtedly be a benefit for the justice system. We would like to see that this initiative, which has been taken under special circumstances, will continue in normal times and will keep on expanding in future.
