As the number of days of coronavirus outbreak slowly rises along with death toll there are a number of other graphs that have also spiked. One such graph is the amount of violence that is being carried out against women in the country.

There are a number of reasons behind this phenomenon. Although violence against women or domestic violence has been an issue which people ponder on occasionally, it is also alarming that it has been on the rise since the outbreak.

A report published in this daily shows that arguments, conflict, clash, frustration and tension increased significantly at many families during the ongoing coronavirus situation.

The report quotes that some 308 women and girls were tortured in the country in June, of which, 101 women and girls became rape victims.

There is a lack of proper awareness and mental health

programmes in the country which gives no way out for

the public and they engage in this type of actions.

This number showcases just one month of survey and has been broken down into a number of criteria such as fatality after rape, gang rape, abduction and other killings.

This is a serious threat pointing towards the mental instability and breakdowns because of the viral outbreak. Experts opine that economic and mental stability of people has completely broken down due to general holiday and lockdown of more than three months.

This has played a key role in the torture on women and girls at home. There is a lack of proper awareness and mental health programmes in the country which gives no way out for the public and they engage in this type of actions.

Knowing that these problems exist in modern society, it is imperative that proper actions are taken to boost morale and also create awareness so that this type of occurrences doesn’t take place in future.

This serious social, cultural and economic problem in Bangladesh, where nearly two out of three women have experienced gender-based violence during their lifetime, must be addressed properly and strictly.

Moreover, exemplary punitive actions must be taken against recorded cases so that the would-be culprits of such violence would refrain from engaging in such activities.
