Ruling Awami League is set to take action against the party leaders of all levels who disobeyed party decisions or worked against the candidates during the last general election and the recent local body elections.

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Saturday said these while talking to newsmen following a meeting with the party’s departmental secretaries at AL president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office.

Obaidul Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, said that the decision of taking action against the discipline violators will start implementing from next week. Action would be taken against anyone including lawmakers, ministers or local leaders whoever have violated party discipline, he added.“We have received allegations of violating party discipline against around two hundred party leaders. Now we are scrutinizing the allegations and we will start taking actions against the violators from July 28,” Obaidul Quader said.

Earlier, the party’s highest policy making body Awami League Central Working Committee (ALCWC) took the decision unanimously to issue show-cause notices upon its lawmakers, ministers as well as local leaders who worked against the party nominated candidates in the recently held local body elections.

About the type of organizational actions against the party rebels, Quader said, “The party high-ups can suspend someone or can issue show-cause only or we can only ask someone to explain their positions why they have backed rebels or breached party discipline during local body elections.”

Asked whether they have received any allegations against MPs and ministers in this regard, the AL general secretary categorically said, “We have received allegations and still receiving. We are scrutinizing them. But all allegations might not be true.”

The ruling party on Saturday also decided to distribute relief materials among flood victims across the country.

A meeting of the party secretaries at AL president’s Dhanmondi political office with its general secretary Obaidul Quader in the chair took the decision.

At the meeting, Awami League formed six committees to distribute the relief items in the flood-hit areas.

AL Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi will act as the coordinator of the relief distribution programme.

The six teams will distribute the relief materials in Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Rangpur, Sirajganj, Gaibandha, Bogura, Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Sunamganj, Chattogram, Bandarban, Feni, Munshiganj, Chandpur, Manikganj, Tangail and Jamalpur districts.
