It is encouraging news that 492 villages of 492 upazilas will be made free from the curse of unemployment under a new initiative of the government. The villages have been nominated on the basis of their poverty rates. There are about 89 thousand villages in the country. Out of these, this pilot project under the Youth and Sports Ministry will target the most poverty-ridden villages in each upazila.

The unemployed youths of these villages will receive training and loans in order to help them out of the vicious cycle of poverty. In addition to the 83 trades, they will also receive training in new trades which have been introduced. They will also be given computer literacy and other skills required to hold a job.

Mobile training centers are being taken around which offer services through computer systems, internet facilities, multimedia projectors, audio systems, etc. Modern computer laboratories have been set up in each district. In these labs, the government will create employment opportunities for trained youths.

The youths will become eligible for employment opportunities abroad thereby contributing to remittance. Those employed locally will contribute directly to local production. There will be one training center in each district.

We welcome this initiative as it will ease the sufferings of thousands of people across the country. Moreover, if this initiative is successful, then it can be implemented in other villages as well.

The undertaking is sure to bring down the unemployment level in the country. The implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) would reduce the unemployment rate in Bangladesh to 3 percent by 2030. This will also directly reduce the number of people living in poverty.

The project will help those living in rural areas find employment without the need to move to urban areas. This will reduce the pressure on the ever-expanding population of the main cities in the country. If the project is implemented successfully it will lead to rapid development in rural areas and increase the overall GDP of the country as well.
