Village roads to get new look

Rural people’s dream come true

The government has taken a massive move to develop the country’s all village roads to ensure smooth and safe transportation of people and goods. The project aims to minimise cost in vehicular movement and travel times. The estimated cost of the scheme is at Tk 3516 crore which will come from the government exchequer. The Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED) will implement the project by December 2021.

Once, country’s most districts were backward as they did not have developed communication. As a result, country’s people especially who used to live in villages had to face serious difficulties while going to other parts of the country. But now the scenario is being changed in every district gradually as the ruling Awami League under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been implementing many development projects specially road communications.

According to sources, for the lack of proper maintenance, most of the roads in rural areas suffered damages resulting in loses to the government resources. In this circumstance, the Local Government Division has decided to identify and repair the damaged roads in rural areas across the country to make the communication system better.

As part the project, all village roads in 482 upazilas of 64 districts will be improved. It also aims to trade agricultural goods and products easily. As the pre-condition for any country’s economic advancement is an improved communication system, the government has taken various projects to develop the country’s road, water and railway communications.

During these last decades of the twentieth century, the world has witnessed the emergence of a new political, social, technological and economic environment. Developed countries are now governing the global economy only after succeeded to bring about a tremendous communication revolution.

And now the new communication technologies are also being developed rapidly and more widely available in Bangladesh. Bangladesh has already reached at a new stage of development with the rural economy becoming stronger as a huge change has taken place in every sector of society.

And the touch of development is everywhere in rural and urban areas. Once the said project is implemented, it will boost the commercial trade and economy in rural areas across the country. The project also aims to improve the socio-economic management and to create new jobs to reduce poverty rate in the country.

The ruling government is determined to make smooth road communications to develop all parts of the country. An official of LGD told Bangladesh Post that rural road network will improve further once the project is implemented. The rural roads, which have been damaged due to improper maintenance, will be repaired under the scheme,

He said, it will minimise transportation cost while productions in farms and non-farm levels in rural areas will be increased. He, however, said, two another projects are going on for the development of the rural communication and transportation system. According to the project, the government plans to rehabilitate 4,717km of rural roads, reconstruct 2281km of others roads and also rehabilitate 300km roads, which are less damaged.
