Free bicycles were distributed among 333 village police members in 36 unions of Magura district on Monday afternoon.
According to district administration sources, the bicycles were purchased at a cost of Tk 25 lakh 97 thousand by the local government department under the management of the district administration.
Advocate Saifuzzaman, MP from Magura-1 constituency, handed over the bicycles at Sheikh Kamal indoor stadium as the chief guest while, Ashraful Alam, Deputy Commissioner of Magura presided over the ceremony. Zilla Parishad Chairman Pankaj Kundu, Local Government Deputy Director Afaz Uddin, Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman Abu Nasir Bablu and Municipal Mayor Khurshid Haider Tutul spoke on the occasion.
Deputy Commissioner Dr Ashraful Alam said, “The village police had no allocation for bicycles. These bicycles have been purchased from the money saved by our local government department. If this work was not done, the money would have been returned. We’re glad.”
The chief guest Saifuzzaman Shikhar MP said, “The role of village police is very important in implementing various government programs including maintaining law and order in rural areas.”
