Vice admiral Mohammed Shaheen Iqbal has been appointed the new chief of Bangladesh Navy.
The appointment was announced in a circular issued by the defence ministry on Saturday.
Earlier, he was promoted to the rank of vice admiral.
He will be on his new role from July 25 this year when the outgoing Chief of Naval Staff Admiral AMMM Aurangzeb Chowdhury’s term in office will come to an end.
Shaheen Iqbal’s tenure will end on July 24 in 2023.
Born in an aristocrat Muslim family in Dhaka, Shaheen Iqbal joined in Navy on June 1 in 1980. He was commissioned in the Bangladesh Navy on December 1 in 1980, two years after he joined the force.
During his long naval career, he served in ships and bases in various capacities, including as assistant chief of naval staff (personnel) and assistant chief of naval staff (operations).
He also played vital role in curbing illegal drug smuggling and in combating human trafficking as a Director of National Security Intelligence. He also worked in important in Prime Minister Office.
He has undergone professional courses in Bangladesh and abroad.
